Honesty Time: My Coffee Tastes Like Dirt

Honesty Time: My Coffee Tastes Like Dirt

Honesty Time: My Coffee Tastes Like Dirt

If there’s one thing I want this blog to be, it’s honest.  So I’m thinking of starting a weekly series where I share my honest thoughts about…well…anything.

I’m gonna start this series talking about my “lovely” whole food diet.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the way I eat and am very happy with how my diet makes me feel physically and mentally.  But the last thing I want people to think is that this experience has been only “amazing, positive life changes!!” and “sunshine and rainbows!!!”  Seriously, there have been times where my mom and I wanted to punch each other in the face.

My favorite part of the day was waking up and enjoying my morning coffee.  I used to take it with Hazelnut flavored cream.  A little sweetness, a little flavor, and a whole lot of creamy goodness.  If I didn’t have the hazelnut, I could go for plain cream with a little sugar.  Sometimes, just cream.  Sometimes, just sugar.  Basically, I just need something in my coffee to find it enjoyable.

As this diet calls for no added sugar and no dairy, I had to say farewell to not only my favorite flavored creamer but cream and sugar in general.  Now I have had coffee black before.  It’s bearable, but it is not enjoyable.  Whoever says they enjoy the taste of straight black coffee is lying to you.  You may drink it that way, but do not tell me that you enjoy it.

So, I realized that I was going to have to find something else to put into my coffee.  Because I sure as Hector wasn’t going to give up coffee on top of everything else.  As we have basically replaced regular milk with almond milk in our diet, we decided to try almond milk “creamer” that we found at the store.

Let me remind you how almond milk is made – almonds are soaked in water, the mixture is pureed, and the pulp is strained out.  Now I don’t know how almond milk creamer is made because I really don’t understand how you could make a mix of almonds and water “creamy”.  But anyone who has ever had almond milk before will tell you that it basically tastes like earthy, nutty, water.

Mix that watery nuttiness with black coffee….and, well, you understand the title of this post now.  Dirt.  I feel like I am consuming actual, literal dirt.  My mom can’t even drink it.  She puts cream in her coffee.  (Shhhhhh, don’t tell!)  When Garrett was visiting I had him try it when I picked him up from the airport and I thought I was gonna have to pull over so he didn’t yak in the car.

As the month went on, I got more and more used to the taste.  But, since our 30 days our up, cream in my coffee was the first thing I reintroduced.  I don’t plan on drinking it everyday because I definitely think my body feels better when I don’t consume lactose, but a little treat here and there can’t hurt!!

If you have any questions on the Whole30 diet, or whole food in general, please feel free to ask! Leave a comment, shoot me an email, or use the contact page!  I also wrote about about it here.

Enjoy your Wednesday 🙂
