OCEAN CITY, MD
OCEAN CITY, MD
There are hecka pictures in this post, so I’ve decided to write up here instead of allllll the way down there. Last weekend I was in Ocean City, Maryland. a.k.a one of my favorite places on Earth. Now, a lot of people think of a crowded boardwalk, tourists, and a busy beach when they hear Ocean City. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You don’t need to go to the beach. Or the boardwalk. The bay side of Ocean City is 10 times more pretty and 100 times more relaxing.
I, of course, had to take Garrett to the beach at least once. Because it’s the beach!! We went our first afternoon (after spending the whole day paddle-boarding in the bay). Enjoy the picture of Garrett getting pummeled by a wave. There are plenty more where that came from, but I decided to spare him and only post one on the slightly less embarrassing side 🙂 . I also did not include the photos of Garrett trying to get buckets of sand out of his bathing suit. The waves, for some reason, were crashing so close to the shoreline and churning up sooo much sand that it wasn’t even enjoyable to be swimming in the waves. But we did it anyway!
That night we just relaxed with family. The best part about going on vacation is being okay with doing nothing. We ordered crabcakes and all just sat and talked. (And drank).
On Saturday we celebrated Father’s Day at my aunt’s house. My dad is one of four boys, and all four of the families were there to celebrate our dads/uncles and our Grandad. It was super windy which made the bay super choppy. We took the boat out to cruise around for a little and ended up coming back after five minutes because the entire bay decided to form into a wave and come into the boat. More than once.
So the dad’s whipped out the relaxation station. (The massive raft that sits 8 people AND their drinks.) In one picture you can see my dad looking back with his arms reaching for the beer that someone is throwing him. We tied the thing to the dock and I’ve never seen my father and uncles so relaxed. (Except for when the waves came every so often.) Also, little Roy (the dog) would NOT take his eyes off his dad (my cousin Vince) the ENTIRE time Vince was in that thing. It was so stinkin’ cute. And it wouldn’t be a Strittmatter family gathering without cornhole. One of my favorite pictures is of the four sons playing each other. Brother bonding!!! <3
By far the best part about Ocean City is the sunsets over the bay. Every single night you get to experience something magical. Every minute the colors change, and it’s like your watching a slideshow of a million different sunsets all at once. But Saturday night was something unearthly, something breathtaking. The sun was just so bright and the colors just so vivid. I’ve never seen such a profound sunset. I think my Grandad knew that we were celebrating him and I think he was telling us that he was right there with us. Boy do I miss his presence. But I sure as hell felt it looking at that sunset.
Since I moved two years ago, Garrett and I have visited each other ten times…I can literally count on my hands the moments I have spent with my guy in the past two years. However, this was, by far, the best weekend of mine and Garrett’s lives. I think every time new time we see each other, we say it’s the best trip yet; any amount of time we get together is the best time. This kid and I could be entertained with a ball of yarn. When I’m in his presence, I feel complete. I feel whole. I feel normal. How could that not be the best time ever? And it’s only gonna keep getting better.
Until next time, my sweet boy.
